Loneliness is the malady of the century, yet few of us can do much to alleviate it, except perhaps as artists, by using our expression to depict its turmoil. With “Sitting by the Gene Pool”, Ed Ballou shows us the vulnerability of the human spirit, the uncertainty of the love experience, and the inevitability of pain for those on the road to love, for being hurt is not only part of the process, but a necessary part. At a time of evolutionary progress, Time plays a principal role in helping us to discover the necessity of love and to make the decision to welcome it into our lives. Without Time pushing us forward, we would either miss the call of love, or perhaps even avoid it altogether, fearful of its demands. Because of the timeliness of its theme, “Sitting by the Gene Pool” merits a production that would serve as a breath of hope and motivation in these love-demanding times, when the percentage of single people continues to increase steadily in most of our cities.
